Bhagavad Gita · Verse 2.13

Verse 2.13

From Chapter 2 — The Yoga of Knowledge

Original text

देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा। तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति॥

Translation

“Just as the embodied one passes through childhood, youth and age in this body, so it passes to another body. The steady are not confused by this.”

Source — Bhagavad Gītā 2.13 (traditional Sanskrit text). English rendering by Frenly Divine — a working translation, not an authoritative one.

Understand

What it is saying

Explanation — written by Frenly Divine, not scripture

The argument is made by analogy with something already familiar: you have already lived in several bodies — a child's, a young person's, an ageing one — and did not think you became someone else.

Why it matters

It is the first place the Gītā separates the one who is aware from what is changing around that awareness.
